Four Super-Popular Cosmetic Treatments for Men

Women aren’t the only ones getting cosmetic treatments to look younger. More men are flocking to their dermatologists seeking nonsurgical cosmetic treatments. From celebrities like Brad Pitt, Deion Sanders, and Simon Cowell to regular, real-life guys, men are getting “work done.” Procedures such as Botox®, chemical peels, micro needling, and Kybella® are some of the popular treatments men want.

At Balcones Dermatology in Austin, Texas, we offer all four of these and more. If you’re a man looking for a simple way to refresh your appearance, call us for an appointment or make one online, to find out how you can look better with little to no downtime. Read on for more details on the most popular treatments.

Botox

Botox, also coyly called “brotox” by some, involves getting shots (injections) of a medication known as a neuromodulator. Botox, which is botulinum toxin, is effective at eliminating fine lines and deep wrinkles in the forehead that stem from repeated facial expressions. The movement of the forehead muscles that creates facial expressions is what causes the wrinkles to form. After treatment with Botox, the muscles are more relaxed, reducing the depth of the wrinkles so that many of the facial lines disappear.

How does Botox work? A few hours after Botox is injected, it latches onto the nerve endings of the muscles it’s injected into. As time goes on, which is anywhere from two to 10 days, the Botox takes effect and fully blocks the nerve impulses of the muscles of the treated area. Once this happens, it prevents full movement of the treated muscles.

In addition to the forehead, another popular spot to treat is between the eyebrows and above the nose. Some guys don’t like having deep lines in this spot and feel self-conscious about them, as they can make you look older and give the illusion of an “angry” face and mood. These lines are commonly referred to as “11s” or frown lines. Medical professionals call them glabellar lines.

Sometimes Botox is also used in the muscles that control the eyebrows at the temple. When injected in this area, Botox can give your eyebrows a lift at the end of each brow, creating a younger, more refreshed appearance. This also lifts the outer portions of your eyelids. Think of a mini eye lift to fix those droopy top lids, and you’ve got the picture.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a great way to enhance your skin and appearance.  A chemical peel is a topical treatment, meaning it’s noninvasive, so there’s no cutting of the skin and no needles involved. Different solutions are used for chemical peels -- some are milder and some are stronger. The solution Dr. Bushore chooses for you depends on the amount of rejuvenation you’re looking for.

After you and Dr. Bushore decide on the strength of your peel, the preparation is applied to your facial skin to remove the dead skins cells that sit on the surface. This is known as exfoliation. Once these old skin cells are exfoliated, your skin will look brighter, smoother, and more toned.

Microneedling

Another effective treatment to achieve an improved appearance is microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT). Using the Eclipse MicroPen® Elite, Dr. Bushore uses sterile, fine needles to create tiny holes in the top layer of your skin. When these invisible holes are made, it causes your skin’s healing process to kick in. This healing reaction produces more collagen -- think of it as scaffolding in the skin -- to form in the treated areas.

Microneedling results in a tightening up of loose skin, and a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. If you have oversized pores, microneedling can make them look smaller, too. If you’re looking for an effective strategy to rejuvenate your skin, but don’t like the idea of medication injections, microneedling may be for you.

Kybella

Another way to trim years off your face is by slimming down a double chin. If you’re concerned you have too much chin flab, also known as submental fat, Kybella may be just what you’re looking for. Kybella contains a medication known as deoxycholic acid, which is also a chemical produced naturally by the body.

When Kybella is skillfully injected into the right areas under your chin, it works to melt away the fat by destroying the actual fat cells, giving you a more streamlined profile. The results from Kybella are permanent, as the body disposes of the damaged fat cells over time, and the area slims down for good.

If you’re a guy who wants to look younger and feel more self-confident, call Dr. Bushore’s office at Balcones Dermatology in Austin, Texas, for an appointment.
