Patch Testing

Patch Testing for Skin Allergies in Austin, TX

Uncover the root cause of persistent skin irritation with expert-guided patch testing at Balcones Dermatology & Aesthetics.

If you're experiencing chronic rashes, itching, or inflammation, the cause may be an allergic reaction to everyday substances. Patch testing is a diagnostic service designed to detect delayed allergic skin reactions that develop over time — different from the immediate responses identified through prick testing.

What Is Patch Testing?

Patch testing is a specialized dermatological test that helps identify substances causing allergic contact dermatitis. Common culprits include ingredients in skincare products, detergents, metals, fragrances, and preservatives. This test is ideal when other allergy tests have come back negative or when the reaction isn’t immediate.

What to Expect During Your Visit

At your appointment, board-certified dermatologist, Dr. David Bushore, will assess your symptoms and apply small amounts of potential allergens to your upper back using adhesive patches. These patches remain on your skin for 48 hours, during which it’s important to keep the area dry and undisturbed. Dr. Bushore uses NACDG 80 series, which tests for the 80 most common contact allergens in North America.

You may experience some localized itching or mild discomfort — this is normal and expected.

Follow-Up and Results

After 48 hours, you’ll return to our office so the patches can be removed and the skin assessed for any reactions. A second follow-up may be needed a few days later to check for delayed responses. Based on your results, we’ll develop a personalized treatment plan that may include topical therapies, antihistamines, or lifestyle adjustments to avoid specific allergens.
